Man awake during 23 year coma – or was he?
Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
As widely reported this week in the Daily Mail, abc , msn and other news media, a man in Belgium who was diagnosed with persistent vegetative state 23 years ago after a car crash, was actually consciously aware the whole time!
Incredible as this may be, what might be almost as incredible if found to be true, is the suggestion that the miracle reassessment which appears to have liberated Rom Houben is itself a cruel hoax, or at best self-deluded wishful thinking by the family and medics of the patient.
Paranormal debunker, James Randi and others have dismissed the communication methods apparently used by Mr Houben – Facilitated Communication – whereby another person ‘helps’ type messages on the patient’s behalf, as a discredited fake.
Whatever the truth, we find the story incredible and also incredibly sad. What may be worse is the suggestion that Mr Houben may actually be aware but still trapped in the prison of his own body and unable to communicate, watching others use his hand to type their own messages on his behalf.

Incredible newt uses its bones as weapons!
Friday, August 21st, 2009
from BBC website:
One amphibian has evolved a bizarre and gruesome defence mechanism to protect itself against predators.
When attacked, the Spanish ribbed newt pushes out its ribs until they pierce through its body, exposing a row of bones that act like poisonous barbs.

The Thatcher Effect – strange, and a bit creepy!
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009The Thatcher effect, named after the notorious former premiere, whose photograph was first used to demonstrate the effect, refers to the odd way the human brain perceives an upside-down face. The best way to explain is to demonstrate. Have a look at this video, which is a wee bit creepy…

So the Thatcher effect means that on an upside-down face, we do not notice if the eyes and mouth are turned around 180 degrees (so they are the right way up, but the wrong way up for the picture). Cool.

Human hibernation!
Friday, January 23rd, 2009This sounds like it’s a hoax, but, incredibly, c’est vrai!
In Revolutionary France, the French countryside used to shut down for half the year. When the cold weather came whole towns and villages would effectively hibernate, spending all their time sleeping indoors for months on end.
