It is thought that dogs noses are around a million times more sensitive to certain smells than human noses. Reasons are several. First of all, a dog’s nose is typically four times the volume of ours; then their noses have about 200 million olfactory (ethmoidal) cells compared to our 5 million; their large nose is wet, which helps to pick up and dissolve scents; and when they pick up a scent they start salivating, the wet tongue helping to pick up and dissolve even more scent particles.
