The Norfolk Broads are largely artificial!

The Norfolk Broads are not naturally occurring lakes, but are for a large part man-made. They were formed when the pits left when peats were dug from the land between the 12th and 14th centuries. These pits filled with water to form the Broads and the peat digging industry was abandoned.
